Midterm Feedback

What is a midterm feedback session?

A midterm feedback session is a CTL-facilitated session conducted with students enrolled in one of your courses in order to provide you with their feedback about the course. This feedback tends to be of better quality than that collected from surveys or end-of-semester evaluations.  Faculty request these sessions as they offer you the opportunity to go back to students to reinforce class learning goals while addressing their concerns.Click here for the 1982 paper by Clark and Redmond, who first introduced the process at the University of Washington’s Biology Learning Resource Center.

How is a session conducted?
You will introduce the purpose of the session, encourage students to be candid and specific, and then exit the classroom in order to maintain student anonymity. The session is run by the Instructional Consultant.Students, in small groups, work through a Start/Stop/Continue* exercise. As a group, they agree on the examples and constructive feedback to provide.1. What should continue happening in this class?
2. What should stop happening/what is obstructing your learning?
3. What ideas do you have for this course/what should start happening?

What happens post-session?
You will receive a short, confidential memo summarizing student feedback as well as the student feedback itself. Have a brief discussion with your students acknowledging that you have received their feedback and explaining what you plan to do about it.
